NHS Mandate must make services more accountable to patients

Author:The Patients Association
Date Added:14 November 2012

The new NHS Mandate can’t just be words but must deliver change for patients in wards and surgeries across the UK.

The Patients Association has welcomed the publication of the NHS Mandate, in particular the focus on patient dignity and respect.

Katherine Murphy, Chief Executive of The Patients Association, said

“The Patients Association welcomes the introduction of a mandate which we believe strengthens the ability of patients to hold the NHS to account. We are particularly happy with the focus on improving standards of care and the shift from focussing solely on treatment.

We hope that this will herald a new age in the NHS which will see the issues of dignity and respect for all patients put at the front and centre of all health service activities. The Government and the Commissioning Board now need to ensure that the mandate is not just words but translates into action.”
