Your Experience Counts - Patient Experience Survey 2009

Below is the foreword to this significant report on the patient experience from the Patients Association's President, Claire Rayner:

A hospital appointment should be as stress-free as possible. We may already be worried about what may be wrong with us, but we should not have to add to our stress levels by wondering if we can park, what the charges will be, if a conversation with medical staff can be carried out in a confidential way and if getting lost on the walk to the consultant will make us late.

We were delighted when HEFMA – the Health Estates and Facilities Management Association – invited us to present at their 2009 Conference on the importance of improving the patient environment, delivering clean, safe and well maintained accommodation and the outcomes of our survey. These and patients are the experts in what makes for a good hospital environment and now that we have produced these results for patients and staff, we look to them and their clinical colleagues at individual hospital level to take up the challenge and put the changes and improvements in place. Above all, patients want direct information about the ward on which they are going to be a patient and, as we have said repeatedly and will continue to campaign for, a great majority of patients want single room accommodation. And certainly, mixed sex accommodation should be outlawed in the 21st century.

The findings are a challenge to the NHS but need not cost a fortune to implement. We are happy to help further in any way to put them into effect.
