All of us at the Patients Association are horrified at Lucy Letby’s crimes. We send our deepest sympathies and condolences to the families who are the victims of these heinous offences.

There are many questions that need to be answered about how Letby was able to continue to offend and why, when concerns about her behaviour were raised, the trust didn’t take it more seriously and take immediate action.

It is critical that the terms of reference of any government inquiry are discussed and agreed in full partnership with the families who have been affected by Letby’s crime. Their needs and wishes must form the basis of this inquiry.

As an organisation, we are ready to support the inquiry to ensure it is clearly understood how it was possible for Letby’s crimes to continue when concerns had been repeatedly raised. The inquiry must also look into how to prevent other families experiencing the traumatic pain and loss the parents of children murdered by Letby are experiencing and will live with for the rest of the lives.
